Webinar:
In a webinar on 4 June 2020, Professor Ben Cousins, founder of the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), joined other authors of the study in sharing their ground-breaking research findings on land reform and employment in South Africa. Around 80 senior stakeholders attended, including from the National Treasury, other government departments, academia, the EU and civil society.

The webinar was hosted by the Capacity Building Programme for Employment Promotion (CBPEP) and funded by the European Union.

The research:
‍The study has broken new ground by investigating the potential of small-scale farming for employment generation in specific locations across the country. This is a critical discussion for policy makers, academics and broader civil society active in the land reform debate, and particularly relevant during the COVID-19 crisis. The pandemic has highlighted persistent social inequalities in South Africa and brought the challenge of unemployment and food security to the fore. The redistribution of productive land is able to open up the food system and drastically increase local employment. Download the research outputs below.
